Having been adventurous and introduced ourselves to lots of new-to-us takeaways over the last few months, last Saturday we returned to an old friend.

Gusto Italia has been somewhere we have relied on for a couple of years now, consistently serving up fresh, tasty pizzas of restuarant quality.

And last Saturday was no exception.

We phoned in our order and it arrived, still hot, well within the 45 minutes they had quoted us.

Between us we had chosen a portion of courgette fritte, stuffed mushrooms and garlic bread with tomato to start followed by a couple of 10” pizza’s; Romana with added chilli for me and a Piccante for Significant Other.

As usual all the food was fresh, full of flavour and rather rustic. The garlic bread and pizzas had thin, floury bases with just the right amount of topping, a stark contrast to the doughy, uniform offerings typical of so many takeaways.

The mushrooms were also fresh and tasty, not too heavy on the garlic and with a lovely parmesan bite.

But the star of the meal was definitely the courgette fritte. A new one on us, we will without doubt be ordering them again as they were light, crispy and incredibly more-ish. The courgettes were cooked al dente and the batter was delicate and salty - delicious!

With a price tag of £18.90 for the lot we had great food for half the price of an Italian restaurant. But if you do fancy getting out more, you can even eat in at the takeaway.
