A Fair deal for plenty of grub

I love a Chinese takeaway!

Unfortunately, Significant Other isn’t a big fan and is more of a curry/pizza chap so I very rarely get the opportunity to indulge in the delights of Far Eastern cuisine.

However, last weekend I got my way (and it wasn’t even my birthday!) and, after a quick rummage through the cupboard, we found a menu for Fair View Chinese Takeaway on Cann Bridge Street.

The extensive list offers all the usuals, fish and chips, ‘exotic Korean dishes’ and five different set meal varieties.

Starting at £17.90, they all looked like good value but the meal for two didn’t include starters so we chose off the main menu.

Fancying something traditionally Chinese, I plumped for the char sue chow mein whilst SO kept with his spicy preferences and went for the satay chicken. For starters we chose spring rolls and sesame prawn toast, with some prawn crackers thrown in for good measure.

Phoning through our order we were told it would be ready in 10 minutes! Not bad for a Saturday but we may have just snuck in before the weekend rush began. So Significant Other shot off and was back in a flash with a bag full of piping hot food.

Digging in whilst crunching on a prawn cracker, we found the spring roll was just one big one which we cut in half and shared. The pastry was really crispy and quite flaky, a nice change from some of the soggy offerings I have been given in the past. The filling was hot and plentiful with lots of veg but lacked much flavour. The sesame prawn toast was a good sized helping for two with a thick layer of topping and crispy bread, although again a little lacking in taste.

Moving on to the main courses, SO was a little disappointed to find his wasn’t the skewered but the diced meat variety of satay. But there was plenty of it with crunchy veg and a thick, spicy sauce perfect for dipping his chips in.

My char siu chow mein was packed with lovely chunks of pork and loads of mushrooms and crunchy bamboo. It had plenty of flavour but was rather too greasy for my liking. But that’s just me!

Open until at least 11pm every day except Monday, you can order by phone like we did but they don’t deliver. I’ve noticed that about a lot of Chinese takeaways. Why is that?

But at little over £15 for two courses each plus prawn crackers, you certainly can’t complain, although I don’t think SO was convinced.

Pizza next week then!
