It is is fair to say Slice of Sicily arrives in Preston with something of a reputation.

The Penwortham branch has been open – and wildly popular – for more than a decade now, and news that ebullient owner Ettore Criscenti was planning a venture in Fulwood had local foodies salivating.

Like its sister south of the Ribble this deli, bistro and pizzeria places emphasis on local ingredients alongside the very best imported wares.

A variety of cheeses, meats, biscuits, liquors, wine, olives is available, and customers can either sit-in or take out.

Thus it was that a selection of Ettore’s wares rocked up in the LEP newsroom late Wednesday afternoon and, in less time than it will take to read this review, had been hungrily devoured.

A Garlic Bread Italiano – a tri-colour of pesto, cheese and tomato – caught the eye and was top notch on the tongue too. The base was soft and yielding, crispy around the sides – it didn’t last long.

A Mediterranean salad of grated Italian cheese, Parma ham, sundried tomatoes, olives and rocket was fresh, full of flavour and a delicious side to a hefty portion of grilled pesto chicken strips.

The mighty meaty star of the show was a portion of Italian Meat Balls.

Although the juicy pork balls were a little on the small side this did mean that the greedy amongst the reviewers (all of them) were able to get more than one in their mouth at a time.

Mini-meats they might have been, but mighty big on flavour no doubt, and their sweet garlicky tomato and basil bath was perfect for dunking chunks of garlic bread crust.
