This steakhouse is most definitely a great place to meat and greet...

As parents, we’ve always prided ourselves on having introduced our children to a variety of cuisine from an early age.

A couple of their friends have decided to become vegetarians leaving their parents anxious about ensuring they get all their nutrients.

It’s not an issue I can foresee with our twosome as they’re definitely meat-guzzling carnivores.

Their eyes lit up with delight when I told them a new steakhouse had opened in Preston and we were going to try it out.

Mumu Steakhouse is the newest venture from Adam Karim, creator of the award winning Manchester restaurants Don Giovanni and Rosso. It sees him return to his Asian roots with an all-halal family friendly steakhouse.

The restaurant describes itself as using locally sourced ingredients and only the finest and freshest halal meat from certified British farmers and butchers.

Be warned though: if you like a beer or wine to wash down your steak, Mumu may not be for you. It is alcohol-free and serves milkshakes and mocktails.

Fortunately for us, it’s all about the food and we were content with soft drinks.

To kickstart our meal, we had a couple of starters to share. After seeing the mammoth portion sizes, we’re glad we didn’t go for one each!

The Buffalo Chicken Wings came in a choice of weights with 500g priced at £7 and one kg priced at £12. We decided 500g would be enough. We were right as the gigantic portion had around 15 wings.

They were finger lickingly good and marinated in a delicious medium spiced house marinade with a lovely unique flavour and the meat was tender and tasty.

We also had the Ultimate Nachos (£4.50), again generously proportioned. They were smothered in gooey cheese and served with jalapenos, fresh salsa and guacamole.

Mumu’s menu features different cuts of steak and even helpfully gives a diagram showing which part of the cow the beef comes from and describes the flavour.

Hubby chose the 8oz fillet steak (£21.50) served with fries and a choice of sauce. He also went for the intriguing sounding ‘Mumu special sauce.’

His steak was cooked perfectly to his requested medium. The beef was beautifully tender and almost melted in the mouth. It was definitely of supreme quality and a cut above the rest.

He enjoyed the Mumu sauce, but it was actually the same flavour as the chicken wings marinade. In hindsight, he would have chosen a different sauce.

I had the lamb chops (£14.50), marinated, served with mashed potato. The lamb was exquisite, tasty and of superb quality and there was plenty of it. The mash however was bland and lacked seasoning. Some gravy might have brought the dish together.

Our son had the What’s Cluckin’ chicken burger (£8.50). I realised Mumu was guilty of one of my pet peeves - charging separately for sides such as fries (£3.50).

As far as I’m concerned, burger and fries is a complete meal and I’d sooner places charged more for a full meal than trying to make it sound cheaper by charging separately for each component.

That said, the burger was absolutely huge and wonderful. Our son chose the Truffle Mac and Cheese (£3.95) as a side.

The Mac and Cheese had its flavour intensified with the addition of truffle. Creamy and delicious with a crispy topping, our usually meat-loving lad astounded us by telling us he wished he could have had it as a main course.

Our daughter was in the mood for fish and chips and thrilled with her beautifully presented meal with the perfectly cooked fish with crispy batter.

She was the only one with room for dessert and enjoyed scoops of salted caramel ice cream (£3.50).

Hubby and I sampled the signature milkshakes made with ice cream. He had salted caramel flavour while I had banana. They were delicious, indulgent and filling.

Mumu’s decor is attractive and modern, the service is friendly and the atmosphere welcoming.

We liked the open kitchen where we could see the food being freshly prepared.

Although the quality of the food is excellent, particularly the meat, it is on the expensive side so won’t become a regular family haunt.

Nevertheless, it’s a great
steakhouse with superb food and a welcome addition to Preston’s restaurant scene.
