Contractors are set to move into Strand Road on Tuesday evening to resurface the carriageway between its junction with Fishergate Hill and the Guild Way flyover.
And although it is only anticipated the road will have to be closed for three nights, Lancashire County Council has made a temporary prohibition of traffic order between 8pm and 6am from August 22 and Saturday September 30 to allow surface dressing to take place.
County Hall chiefs have set aside six weeks to allow for hold-ups caused by the weather.
Detours are being put in place to get traffic around the closure.
One will take southbound drivers via West Strand, Marsh Lane, Ringway, Bow Lane and Fishergate Hill.
The other will direct northbound vehicles along Liverpool Road, Golden Way, Guild Way, Junction Road and West Strand.
