And while that is, unfortunately, no longer the case after years of seemingly constant pub-closures (there are now fewer than 30,000 pubs in the entire UK), we decided that what better way to enjoy a trip down memory lane than by taking a look through our best archive pictures of forgotten Preston pubs from eras gone by.
I asked Lancashire Post readers what some of their old favourite haunts might be, and here are some of their suggestions...
49. Sumners Hotel

50. The Royal Lancaster Hotel
This pub was later revamped and renamed Coconut Grove. Some may even remember it as Crusoe's. It finally closed its doors in 1996 and was the main office building for the Strettles empire Photo: John Holderness
51. The Lime Kiln
A pub since around 1839, the Lime Kiln sat proudly on Aqueduct Street. It traded as the Lime Kiln until its closure in 2008 and was then converted into a Chinese restaurant. But it lay empty from 2014. The building has been plagued by problems (not whilst trading as the Lime Kiln pub it must be noted). It was once described as a 'ticking time bomb' after leaking gas bottles were found close to botched electrical work. And in 2018 a cannabis farm was discovered at the premises.
