Preston Caribbean Carnival postponed as a result of pandemic

This year’s Preston Caribbean Carnival has been postponed because of the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

Organisers are hoping that the series of events under the carnival banner – which were due to take place in Moor Park over the weekend of 6th/7th June – can be rearranged for a date later in the year, rather than cancelling them outright at this stage.

The carnival procession itself had been planned to travel through the Deepdale area on the Sunday afternoon of the festival. Last year, the event celebrated its 45th anniversary and is thought to be the oldest cultural celebration in the city other than the Preston Guild.

A message on the organisers’ Facebook page said: “Our lives have all been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, which is currently not only a UK but a global issue.

“[We] have therefore decided that in the best interests of everyone involved the Preston Caribbean Carnival weekend events are being postponed.

“We are looking to have this important multicultural event at a date later in the year, when it will be safe to bring our diverse Preston community and visitors from Lancashire and other regions, together for Preston Caribbean Carnival 2020.

“Our thanks to all paraders, stallholders and performers who have begun your preparations for this year’s carnival. We hope that you will be able to join us when we confirm a new date for the event.

“We urge everyone to be vigilant in observing all protective measures that are being advised, enhanced hygienic care and physical social distancing. Be kind to each other and be safe.”

People are being encouraged to monitor the carnival’s website and social media channels for any further updates about a new date.
