It has been estimated that approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK each year will experience a mental health problem and there are concerns that this estimate will rise due to the impact of Covid-19.

Levels of anxiety and fear in relation to isolation, social distancing, restrictions and uncertainty have become widespread due to the pandemic.

Dr Jim Hacking, local GP and GP Executive Lead for Mental Health at Morecambe Bay Clinical Commissioning Group said: “Prioritising our mental health has never been more important than it is now. The coronavirus pandemic and restrictions have been very challenging for us all, and people’s mental health will have been affected in various ways.

“Many people will be feeling frustrated with the restrictions especially as the colder months are approaching and getting outside for regular exercise becomes more challenging. Due to this we must do all we can to look after each other and provide emotional support to our loved ones – even just checking in and asking someone how they’re feeling can really help.”

Making positive change may seem hard, especially during uncertain times and it can be hard knowing where to start. Whether it's going for a walk, learning a new skill or doing something creative, taking the first steps to getting support for yourself, or reaching out to someone else can have a big impact on your mental health.

Dr Hacking added: “You might need support with your mental health if you’re finding the way you’re thinking, feeling or reacting is more difficult or even impossible to cope with. There are lots of different ways to get help and support for your mental health so having the right information and knowing where to go is vital.”
