A teenager with no known underlying health conditions was among hundreds more people to have died in England after testing positive for coronavirus.

NHS England said on Wednesday that 372 patients, aged between 19 and 103, had died in hospital.

It added that the majority of patients had known underlying health conditions but that a total of 17, aged between 19 and 93, did not.

The deaths were recorded between April 7 and December 1, and bring the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 41,310.

It comes as the Government announced that a further 648 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday, bringing the UK total to 59,699.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies for deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate, together with additional data on deaths that have occurred in recent days, show there have now been 75,000 deaths involving Covid-19 in the UK.

The Government said that, as of 9am on Wednesday, there had been a further 16,170 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.

It brings the total number of cases in the UK to 1,659,256.

The NHS data suggests that the 19-year-old’s death occurred on November 28.

It comes shortly after the death of a 10-year-old boy, who is thought to be one of the youngest victims of Covid-19 in the UK.

Fehzan Jamil, from Bradford, had a number of underlying health issues and despite the efforts of his family to shield him from Covid-19, he contracted the virus and died in hospital. He was laid to rest on November 23.

Other young victims include a 13-day-old baby, thought to have had no underlying health conditions, who was reported to have died with Covid-19 in June.

The latest data from NHS England shows that the majority of deaths occurred in the Midlands, with a total of 100, followed by the north west with 92.

14 other deaths were reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.

Scotland recorded 38 deaths from coronavirus and 951 positive cases in the past 24 hours, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said.

The Scottish death toll under this measure – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – is now 3,797.

A further 1,480 cases of coronavirus were reported in Wales, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 82,489.

Public Health Wales reported another 51 deaths, taking the total in Wales since the start of the pandemic to 2,614.

Four more people have died with Covid-19 and another 416 have tested positive in Northern Ireland, the Department of Health said.

It comes as the UK prepares itself for the rollout of the Pfizer vaccine – which has been approved by UK regulators – next week.
