The latest figures from NHS England show that no deaths due to COVID-19 have been recorded in the last 6 days for Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Royal Preston Hospital.

The new figures released this afternoon (May 9) show the most recent death being recorded at the hospital on Sunday, May 3.

Data provided by the hospital trust to the NHS states that the hospital has gone nearly a week without a patient dying after testing positive for the virus.

However, the figures are being updated on a daily basis as more deaths are confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19.

This is because of the time it takes for deaths to be confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19, for post-mortem examinations to be processed, and for data from the tests to be validated.

It means as more post-mortem tests are processed, the Trust may revise its death figures in the coming days to include previously uncounted deaths that took place several days or even weeks ago.

On Thursday (May 7), the first patient to be admitted to Royal Preston Hospital with coronavirus was discharged home after 55 days.

Meanwhile, more than 200 coronavirus patients at RPH have been discharged after making a full recovery.

The county's other three hospital trusts have also seen a reduction in the number of deaths in recent days.

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals has recorded no new deaths in the last 24 hours, whilst East Lancashire Hospitals has not seen any new deaths in 48 hours.

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust has recorded one death, but it is not known at this stage whether the death happened at Lancaster Royal Infirmary or two of the Trust's hospitals outside Lancashire, in either Barrow and Kendal.

The death brings the total number of hospital deaths from coronavirus in Lancashire to 589.

The figures are for patients who died in hospital - and do not include those who died in other locations, such as care homes.
