Its critical care unit, which remains on the frontline of Lancaster's battle with COVID-19, tweeted: "This morning we discharged our longest stay COVID-19 patient directly home from the ICU, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the place.

"After 107 days on ICU to be able to laugh and celebrate with this patient and their family was a moment in our careers that we will treasure forever."

Staff working on the hospital's Respiratory Ward 37, which helped with the patient's discharge, praised the tireless efforts of their critical care colleagues.

The ward tweeted: "Every now and again you get to witness something magical, today was that day.

"Our colleagues @CareRoyal discharged their longest stay COVID 19 patient home. Well done you amazing people.

"Absolute honour to be able to help you guys get this patient home."
