Eerie picture shows a deserted M55 on one of the hottest days of the year as the lockdown continues

Many of us will have become strangely accustomed to seeing the words 'pandemic', 'quarantine' and 'lockdown' in newspapers and online.

But on one of the hottest days of the year so far, with the mercury tipped to hit 18 degrees later today as the county basks under the terrific spring sunshine, seeing a deserted M55 still seems somewhat eerie.

Usually, the motorway linking Preston and the M6 to Blackpool would be heaving with day-trippers and tourists. In one direction, there'd be excited families straining their necks for the first glimpse of the Tower, caravaners heading off to escape the rat race, and footie fans travelling in to see the Seasiders in action at Bloomfield Road.

In the other, shoppers heading to the Trafford Centre, hikers smeared in insect repellant destined for the Lake District, and, of course, fans heading to Deepdale to see North End!

But as the majority of us prepare for another week under lockdown designed to curb the spread of the coronavirus Covid-19, the carriageways sit quiet and empty.

It shows that most people are listening to the Government's advice, which has been repeated often: Stay home. Protect the NHS. Save lives.
