Fans’ Panel’s John Smith says Preston North End need to strengthen in the summer

With no wins and only one goal scored in our five home outings since the New Year we went potty on Saturday scoring three times in this much-needed and well-deserved win over Huddersfield.

The visitors, who had not won any of their last 11 away games, had more possession in the game’s opening stages but unlike some of our previous games, on this occasion we did not concede a goal with goalkeeper Daniel Iversen once again looking very solid.

We then began to grow in confidence after taking the lead midway through the first half when Brad Potts, in his stylish pink coloured boots, sprung like “The Pink Panther” in pouncing on a rebound to volley in the first goal.

In the second half it was almost “Potty Time” again when he rattled the crossbar with a sublime curling shot. Man of the match Potts then produced a precision cutback from the wing into the penalty area, which Ched Evans clinically executed to double our advantage and put us firmly in control.

The third goal provided the icing on the cake and was a real team goal which would have had the crowd on its feet had they been allowed inside the stadium. It was a free-flowing counter-attack after we broke out from defending a corner, with the final ball into the area from Tom Barkhuizen and finish by Scott Sinclair being outstanding.

The important win pulled us further away from the bottom of the table, the direction opponents Huddersfield – a Premier League side two seasons ago – are heading towards.

This illustrates the high standard of the division we are playing in and that is why I feel this summer must see us invest and recruit some quality players to strengthen the current pool if we are ever going to make the jump from being a mid-table side to become a major force at this level instead of eventually going in the opposite direction.
