Edge Hill has been officially named the UK’s top employer and is now vying to become the best in Europe in the European Business Awards.

The university was judged as one of Europe’s most dynamic and exciting businesses, demonstrating the core principles of the European Business Awards: success, innovation and ethics, and an international mind-set.

The West Lancashire-based university beat off tough competition from nearly 700 national champions already awarded in the first round of the competition by a panel of judges made up of European political and business leaders, academics and entrepreneurs and was the only UK Ruban D’Honneur recipient in its category.

The institution was among 32,000 entrants from 33 countries in the competition.

Vice-chancellor John Cater said: “We are proud that the university has been judged as the only UK Ruban D’Honneur recipient in the Employer of the Year category.

“We were pleased to be given the opportunity to explain in more detail what makes Edge Hill such a special place to work and show why we were not only awarded the Times Higher’s University of the Year but also the best University Workplace for 2014/15.

Dr Cater added: “To be judged against organisations across all sectors, and not only Higher Education, in both the UK and internationally demonstrates the outstanding opportunities we have available to all our staff are amongst the best in Europe.”

Adrian Tripp, chief executive officer of the European Business Awards praised Edge Hill and said: “To survive in this economic climate is hard enough, so to innovate, prosper and grow in the way this year’s Ruban D’Honneur recipients have is truly remarkable. Europe needs more companies like these. Well done to Edge Hill University.”

There will now be a face to face interview with judges before the top awards winners are announced at a glittering gala in June.

Besides the official judges, the general public also get a say to decide the National Public Champions of the competition for each country.
