A squad from UCLan is hoping to carry the flag for Lancashire when they compete against the rest of Europe in the annual Shell Eco-marathon.

Veterans of the student racing competition, who compete on track to see who can travel the furthest on just a single litre of fuel, UCLan has a new team this year and hopes of smashing their previous record, and putting a British team firmly on the leader board.

A prototype gasoline vehicle named ‘UCLan Eco-Shark’ has been updated from last year with a new engine, steering and brake systems and as the name suggests; a new hammerhead-like aesthetic which they hope will make them stand out from the crowd. Team manager Mohammed Rashid said: “We can’t wait to put our car to the test against other teams from all over Europe. Seeing how our rivals have taken on the challenge is really interesting, but we’re confident that our Eco-Shark can blow the rest of them out of the water.

“Hopefully we can show what UCLan and British teams are capable of and smash our record from last year.”

Tony Broad, lecturer and project leader added: “Shell Eco Marathon is now becoming an integral part of the delivery of engineering at our university.

“It gives our students the opportunity to experience a real-world project and to fully exploit the resources available to them.”
