Ashton Community Science College (formerly Ashton-on-Ribble High School) in Aldwych Drive has sent home all of its Year 9 students, less than an hour after they arrived at school.

It follows the school's earlier morning announcement asking all Year 10 pupils to stay at home due to a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the year group.

The school has told parents that it is currently working to trace those children who might have come into close contact with those infected. Those deemed at risk of having been exposed to the virus at the school will be told to self-isolate at home until October 9.

Ashton Community Science College has not confirmed whether it is students or staff members that have tested positive for the virus.

It is now the third confirmed case of coronavirus at the school since the Autumn term began. Last week, all Year 8 pupils were sent home after a child in the year group tested positive.

Earlier this morning, the school sent an urgent message to parents of Year 10 pupils, advising them to keep children at home due to a case of coronavirus.

The message from headteacher Sharon Asquith said: "Your child has been identified as being part of the bubble in which one student has a confirmed case of COVID-19.

"Until we receive further guidance we have taken the decision to request the whole bubble self-isolates until we can account for all students who have come into close contact with the student who has tested positive.

"Once we have traced all individuals who have been in close contact, in line with national guidance, we will contact you to confirm that your child stays at home and self-isolates until October 9, 2020.

"If your child has not been affected, we will be back in contact and inform you that they are safe to return to school.

"We are asking your child to do this to reduce the further spread of COVID-19 to others in the community."

The message added that children who are tested and receive a negative test result - meaning they DO NOT have COVID-19 - will still not be welcomed back to school until after the required 14 day self-isolation period.
