The 11-years-olds, representing St Pius X Catholic Preparatory School in Fulwood, were among just 16 teams from around the UK to be chosen for the CBBC show, Top Class.

In each programme, they will be pitching their knowledge against another team in a bid to win a place in the final.

As well as rounds covering a wide range of subjects, the team from the Garstang Road school will answer questions on its chosen pet topics – capital cities and fractions.

They are also being accompanied by one of the school’s teaching staff, Christine Davies, who will have to answer questions on popular culture, covering topics such as texting and blogging.

Team member Faris Patel said: “To qualify to take part we had to complete a quiz at school and answer 100
questions.

“Then we had a Skype interview and after that we went up to Glasgow for the filming.”

St Pius made it through the early rounds and are hoping for a place in the final, which takes place on September 30.
