Fitness fanatic Mr Charnock was renowned for his passion for teaching and school was his life.

Now, the school where he held the reins for 12 years has used money donated in his memory to create a new library.

Everyone who knew Mr Charnock, who also taught at primary schools in Ingol and Fleetwood, said he was dedicated to improving the quality of life for his young charges.

So, when his family donated £10,000 to the school in his memory, current head Sue Cornwell and her team decided on a lasting tribute.

She said: “ We are passionate about reading at Greenlands. We want every child to have a love of reading and to be able to get lost in a good book.

“We strongly believe this starts from a very early age.”

She added: “We used fabulously funky furniture to design a vibrant and engaging space to promote reading across school.”

They also wanted it to reflect Mr Charnock’s love for the school.

World Book Day week was chosen to officially open the new facility and all the youngsters dressed as their favourite book character.

As Mr Charnock’s family were unable to attend the event, schools adviser and former head at nearby Moor Nook Primary, Celia Davies cut the ribbon with the school counsel.

Parents were invited into school to have a look around the new library.

Mrs Cornwell added: “We chose the Dr Seuss quote on the wall as it epitomises our ethos.

“We are delighted how the library has turned out-a vibrant and engaging environment.

"We use it all the time.”
