The city centre College achieved 99.4 per cent A-Level pass rate and a 100 per cent BTEC pass rate. But this doesn’t tell the whole story.

The reason that students at the College do so well is because of the level of care they receive during their time there.

Whilst the headline figures are fantastic, and speak of a College that continuously produces excellent grades which regularly place it amongst the top Sixth Form College’s in the country, Cardinal Newman College is anything but an exam factory.

“It’s important to us that our students feel happy, supported and are enjoying their studies. If they are happy and enjoying their work, they will achieve much better grades as a result” said Cardinal Newman College Principal Nick Burnham.

It’s not all talk either, there are a range of things that the college puts in place to ensure that its students are well looked after. Kelly Illingworth-Turner, Assistant Principal for Students, said: “The transition from High School to College can be a tricky one, so we like to ensure that we have all the measures in place to make it as smooth as possible, not just at the start of the year, but all the way through their time with us.

“We have a fantastic pastoral programme, delivered by our Achievement Tutors and Newman Aspire, which aims to boost confidence and develop personal skills, promoting a greater sense of belonging. It also endeavours to give students the skills they need to look after their wellbeing not just whilst they are at Newman, but for their whole lives.”

The College also boasts a unique programme called Curriculum Plus, which is extra study support sessions across all subject areas, to help students to manage their workloads. Often scheduled into timetables, but also offered on a more ad hoc basis, Newman’s teachers have more scheduled time for one-to-one or small group work.

As we all know, life isn’t always plain sailing, but the College has that covered too. With dedicated counsellors working at College, there is always someone that students can turn to in times of need.

And if you require a little extra help in the classroom, the Additional Learning Support team provides students with a range of additional learning needs, all the help that they need to succeed.
