Jodie Wardley,16, and 15 years old Mohammed Karadoz joined a host of celebrities, including Kate Winslett, Jessie J and singer Conor Maynard, by taking to the stage to promote diversity and social change at the WE Day UK event.

The pair, and the rest of the prefect team from Christ The King Catholic High School in Frenchwood, were there as WE ambassadors.

The pair were selected by the schools’s senior management team to read a poem on diversity on stage, before a cast of 12,000 from all over the country.

Assistant headteacher Alison Montgomery said the school had been involved in the WE initiative for several years and this was the fourth time a team had been invited to the annual national event. However it was the first time pupils were invited to address the audience.

Mohammed said: “We went for a rehearsal the day before and it was overwhelming to think that the empty space would be filled the next day.

“But, when we got to actually read our poem to the audience the nerves went away. I think it resonated with people. We got a few cheers.”

He said the whole experience was “overwhelming”.

The school combined the event with a trip to the Houses of Parliament.
