For not only did the 27 year old get her degree in Youth and Community Development with honours, she was also presented with the Undergraduate Student of the Year prize for her work to promote community and vibrancy on campus in Lancaster.

Kirstie was instrumental in setting up and planning the student end-of-year festival and worked tirelessly with other students to deliver a monthly film club showing films of interest followed by lively discussion.

She said: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw I’d won a prize. Graduating is enough of an achievement for me. “

She added: “I tried my hand at university before but it didn’t work out. I think it was because I wasn’t on the right course and I believe that this course is probably the best one you can do.

“The most absolutely lovely people to be with, the most lovely, sociable tutors that you can go to for anything. It’s been an amazing time.”

Kirstie has a job working for a local authority helping homeless people.
