Awards win for student film makers

IT's not quite the Baftas, but the champagne corks are ready to pop as Preston's students celebrate their own TV equivalent.

The University of Central Lancashire was a guaranteed winner at the North West Royal Television Society (RTS) Student Awards after claiming all three shortlisted places in the animation category.

The event, recognises the best in student talent across the region in five categories: animation, factual, comedy and entertainment, drama and open and were hosted by Preston TV presenter and journalist, Ranvir Singh, who is also a UCLan Honorary Fellow.

UCLan masters student Jordan King-McCoy and undergraduate Frances Humphries were on the animation shortlist, which saw fellow UCLan masters scholar David Lambie scoop the award with ‘Frankenstein’s Daughter’.

David’s silent comedy film in the style of the early 20th Century cinema sees Dr Frankenstein create a daughter before sending her on a series of disastrous blind dates,

The judges felt this was a very different entry with old school graphics, superb sound, effects and excellent music.

“They felt it had great depth and they were very impressed by the quality.

The university was also nominated in the drama category, with recent film production graduates Matthew Hall and Andrew St Maur shortlisted for their film Bored Games.

UCLan is no stranger to the RTS Student Awards and animation course leader Sarah Kennedy said: I am very proud of all three students for this achievement as well as the dedicated team in the animation department.

“It’s a great accomplishment that UCLan animation students continue to win this award year after year.”

The awards ceremony followed a half-day event produced in partnership with Salford University, which was attended by students from across the North West.
