Preston City Council has deployed two covid marshals to patrol the city and its public parks following recent concerns of people forgetting to socially distance.

The Post understands that they have been funded through Government funding given to Preston City Council.

However, some members of the public told the Post they were concerned that the marshals appeared to be walking together closely and not two metres apart in the park.

One man said: "We couldn't believe it, they were walking next to each other and asking other people to keep apart yet taking up the whole footpath.

"I didn't see them speaking to anyone or asking them to socially distance. I have seen them walking around Preston a couple of times but not actually seen them approach anyone."

It comes as Public Health England figures confirmed there have now been 88,654 confirmed cases in the Lancashire County Council area, with 12,151 in Preston, up from 12,098 yesterday, February 11.

Councillor Robert Boswell, the Cabinet member for environment and community safety, said the Covid marshals have been 'keeping visitors safe' to stop the spread of the virus.

He said: “We are extremely proud of our parks. Avenham and Miller Parks, in particular, are well-loved Prestonian landmarks, which naturally draw individuals and families out for walking, cycling and enjoying some time outdoors.

"Parks have been one of the few sanctuaries which people can enjoy during the lockdown. However, given the current circumstances, we need to take extra precautions to keep all visitors safe and stop the spread of the virus – the Covid Safety Officers (marshals) have a key role to play in this.

“Thankfully most residents are doing their bit and complying with the current restrictions, but these officers are there to remind and support everyone and keep the park as a safe space.”

According to the Preston City Council website the marshals will continue to interact and offer advice to members of the public to ensure restrictions are being met.

Under the lockdown restrictions, you are currently only permitted to leave your home if there is a 'reasonable excuse' to do so.

This includes leaving for work, volunteering, essential activities such as shopping and for exercise with one other person from another household.
