Why the only way is up for Preston's zero-rated quartet

Hundreds of businesses were inspected in the past year by Preston Council and the vast majority were praised for their good hygiene standards.

But four businesses stood out for all the wrong reasons when environmental health inspectors came round to call.

Standards at Stonka, Chopan Authentic Cuisine and Nasza Biedronka, all of New Hall Lane, and The Nile in Church Street were so low, they were given the worst possible zero star rating for their hygiene standards - the only four places in Preston warned they needed to make urgen improvements.

Today, we take a closer look at four establishments criticised by council chiefs for their poor standards.

As well as visiting, we tried products from each of the four to find out if the rating measured up to the standard of food being sold to the customers.

Simon Neighbour, environmental health manager at Preston City Council, said: “Any businesses which receive a zero, one or a two star rating, has the opportunity to work with Preston City Council because shutting businesses is the last option. We want what they want - for them to improve and for their businesses to get at least a three-star rating.”

The scores on the doors food hygiene system was established in 2011 and, in Preston, council inspectors visit food premises and give a rating out of five.

A spokesman from the Food Standards Agency explained there are three key elements to a hygiene inspection.

“A food safety officer inspects a business to check that it meets the requirements of food hygiene law. The officer is from the local authority where the business is located.”

At the inspection, the officer will check: How hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored; The condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities; How the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe and so that the officer can be confident standards will be maintained in the future.

He added: “Each of these three elements is essential for making sure that food hygiene standards meet requirements and the food served or sold to you is safe to eat.”
