Jon Wilson, chief executive of Totaljobs, which recently carried out research into workers' career plans, says: "One in five (22%) workers have realised their current role isn't for them and seven in 10 are now more likely to consider a career change into another industry in light of Covid-19.

"Candidates need to have a clear understanding of how their skills are the right fit for the job they're applying for, even if it's in an industry they're new to," he adds.

So what can you do? Here are Wilson's five top tips...

1. Understand why you want to move

Are you looking to learn new skills, for a new challenge, a better work-life balance, a pay increase, or greater job security? Once you're sure of what's motivating you, consider the industries which have what you're looking for.

2. Keep searches broad

Look across industries and job roles, as you never know where you might find the role that's right for you.

3. Focus on your skills

Surprisingly, employers from different industries often look for the same skills. Totaljobs' analysis found a big overlap in the skills human resources and social care employers are looking for. Care providers looking to hire more staff may find relevant skills, like patience and problem-solving, in candidates who haven't worked in care before. Highlight the transferable skills you have and give examples of how you've used them.

4. Remain calm and confident

Starting a new job or career can be daunting. However, over half (55%) of those who have been displaced and moved industry in the past few months say they were surprised by how smooth the transition was. Keep calm and have confidence in what you bring to the table.

5. Keep it brief

Keep your CV concise, with a sharp focus on your experience and relevant skills. Your covering letter is a chance to show you've done your research and that you understand the company and job you're applying for. It's also your chance to let your personality shine through.
