A Lidl spokesman said: "We can confirm that our Preston store in Eastway Hub is due to open before Christmas and will create around 40 full and part time jobs for the local area.

"We look forward to sharing more information with the local community in due course."

But staff who have been hired to work at the supermarket have now revealed that the store will officially open on Thursday, December 10.

Its normal opening hours will be 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

It will be Lidl's third branch in Preston, joining its established stores in Strand Road and New Hall Lane.

The retail site, known as 'Eastway Hub', has permission for the building of a supermarket, six retail units, one restaurant/pub and a drive-thru restaurant or cafe.

It has been confirmed that Lidl will be joined by steakhouse restaurant Miller & Carter, as well as a drive-thru Costa Coffee, and one of the retail units will be leased to a charity shop.

A new traffic light junction is also being created on the B6241 to provide access to the site.

There are also plans for a new discount supermarket on the site of the current DFS store in Mariner's Way at Preston Docks.

It has not been confirmed which supermarket chain will be moving into the DFS unit, but planning documents do reveal some clues as to the possible identity of the discount food retailer.

With Lidl already having a store less than a mile away in Strand Road, just 5 minutes by car, it seems more likely that the site will be home to a rival retailer, such as Aldi or Food Warehouse.
