Ashbridge Nursery at Maxy House Farm, Cottam, has been given the go-ahead to turn an existing barn on its land into a kitchen, coffee shop, and beauty salon.

The kitchen is expected to serve the nursery, which opened in September 2017, through its chef and assistants.

The costs of running the kitchen are expected to be recouped in part through sales in the coffee shop, with the beauty salon offering hairdressing facilities and beauty treatments.

Bamber Bridge-based planning agents Bramley-Pate & Partners, who are handling the application on behalf of the nursery, said: “It is the intention of the applicants that the coffee shop will enhance the role of the nursery as a key community facility as well as providing a sustainable future use for the barn.

“A salon would be complementary to the proposed small scale coffee shop and offers a further, low impact, sustainable use of the barn.”

Woodplumpton Parish Council raised issues over the application, stating that the services were much needed but the location of the salon was questionable.

Parish clerk for Woodplumpton Parish Council, Julie Buttle, said: “It’s a location issue. The parish council had concerns with parking spaces in the first instance as you have 200 children at this nursery.

Preston City Council has created its North West Masterplan saying that shops and services will be in key service areas.

“This is on the perimeter – we need services but they should be in a key service centre.”

To cope with increased traffic demand on the site, the renovation plans include 13 car spaces, four motorcycle bays, two disability spaces and two cycle spaces.
