The new convenience store in Garstang Road, at the junction with Lytham Road and Watling Street Road, will open at 7am on Friday, December 4.

The Co-op has transformed the former Checco's Italian restaurant, which closed in November 2017, into its latest Preston branch.

Work began back in January to convert the former restaurant into a mini-supermarket, but progress had been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Renovation of the building was completed earlier this month, but Co-op had remained tight-lipped about an opening date.

Manager Stephen Bliss, who has previously managed at Co-op stores in Ingol and Broughton, said he and his team were able to visit the store for the first time today (November 30), ahead of its grand opening on Friday.

Stephen said: "The store is due to open at 7am on Friday, December 4, and we can't wait for people to come and have a look at their new store."

The shop's regular opening times will be 6am till 11pm, Monday to Sunday, said Stephen.

There will be 16 parking spots, including one disabled spot and one light goods vehicle space.

The store will also have a Seattle Coffee Co. machine for customers to purchase hot drinks to take away.

The opening of the Co-op has created 12 jobs, with staff receiving training at other local Co-op stores for the past three to four weeks. There are currently no job vacancies at the store, added Stephen.

In June, Co-op bosses updated the Post on the store's progress, saying that it would open "before the end of the year".

A Co-op spokesman said: "We are taking forward our plans to provide the community with a new Co-op store on Garstang Road in Preston.

"As well as creating a number of jobs, the new store will offer a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables, meal ideas, food-to-go, vegan and free-from foods, award-winning wines and essentials and will also give back to good causes through the Co-op’s membership scheme.

"We look forward to opening our doors to the community before the end of the year."
