The company says the 25,000 sq ft superstore will be running all Tesco’s community programmes which help the local community through grants and food donations.

Tesco’s Bags of Help uses money from the sale of plastic bags to give funding to local groups to help them bring projects to life. The scheme has already donated a total of £1,765,722 in Lancashire, including £94,520 in South Ribble.

The store will also be part of Tesco’s Community Food Connection (CFC) which takes surplus food, that is still fit for use, and donates it daily to local groups and food banks to help those who need it most in the community.

Stores across Lancashire have already donated more than 1.2m meals to foodbank charities and community groups helping people who need support the most.

James Garland, store director, said: “I’m incredibly proud that the newest Tesco store will be opening in Penwortham and we hope it will be a boost to the local community and economy.

“Our colleagues in stores are the heartbeat of Tesco and their local knowledge and commitment means that we can serve customers a little better every day.”

Any local groups that would benefit from this funding are encouraged to apply. The process is managed through the company's partner charity Groundwork’s website. www.tescobagsofhelp.org.uk

Through distribution partners, FareShare and Groundwork, local groups across the country are dedicated to ensuring that the most vulnerable within local communities are supplied with essentials even if they cannot leave home.
