But the custom’s days may be numbered after fears that the last traditional match day pub may close its doors.

Staff at the Sumners, on Watling Street Road, do not know how long the pub – which is run by Greene King Brewery – can continue to trade, stating a lack of investment as part of the reason for dying trade.

A spokesman for Greene King said: “There are no plans to close The Sumners in Preston and to suggest otherwise is incorrect. We are currently advertising for a new permanent operator to work with us on an exciting investment at the pub.“Currently there is a temporary tenant at the pub who has been there since August while we find a permanent operator to run it for the long term.

“Anyone interested in running the pub should call 01284 714 497.”

Along with the now closed Garrison Royal, left, and New Deepdale Hotel, the Sumners has been a traditional match day watering hole for fans.
