Dr Lee Tsang, who grew up on Merseyside and studied at Lancaster University, is now a music lecturer at the University of Hull and runs a professional orchestra, Sinfonia UK Collective.

The conductor and singer is bringing the orchestra to the Chapel of St Martin’s at the University of Cumbria in Lancaster for a one-off concert which will explore the relationship between classical and jazz music and which features a piece inspired by 30,000-year-old cave paintings.

Dr Tsang said: “It’s been 18 years since I last performed in Lancaster and I’m thrilled to be doing it again.

“I hope that, in this small way, I can give something back to an area that played such an important role in my development.”

Dr Tsang was taught music entirely through the state system. At Lancaster, while studying for a PhD, he performed in orchestras and choirs, succeeded Prof. Denis McCaldin as conductor of the University Chamber Orchestra and helped out as choral director and soloist with local community ensembles, including Morecambe Philharmonic.

For his concert at St Martin’s, Dr Tsang will showcase a collaboration between his orchestra and one of Canada’s most prominent musicians, David Braid, a two-time Juno Award winner, and official Steinway Artist 2015.

Standard tickets for the evening concert at 7.30pm cost £15 and are available from Skiddle www.skiddle.com 0844 884 2920. Under 19s are free.
