For these city jivers, it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swingaroo

There was a whole lot of shakin’ going on as around 100 devotees of Rockabilly converged on the city’s Masonic Hall to dance the night away to Doug Perkins and the Spectaculars.

“It was a fantastic night,” said Jane Lowe, public relations manager for the north west-based band. “The boys were absolutely buzzing at the end of the gig.

“Normally at these nights you might get around 50 on the dance floor, but it was packed. They loved it.”

The Swingeroo Vintage Dancehall is staged on the last Friday of every month with different guest bands.

Doug Perkins and the Spectaculars brought their own brand of rockabilly music to delight the crowd.

The four-piece outfit plays authentic, showstopping music of original rock n’ roll pioneers like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Eddie Cochran.

“There was a mix of stuff from songs from the fifties, to modern covers from today’s charts but with a rockabilly twist, and some of their own material too,” explained Jane. “The dancing was incredible. They really know how to get into it at these Swingeroo nights.”

Doug Perkins and the Spectaculars – named after the founder of Specsavers – recently beat 40 groups to win Southport’s Battle of the Bands contest.
