‘Through The Leaves of The Green Tree’ by Donna Worthington explores the life of Etty Hillesum based on the diaries she left behind after she died aged 29 in Auschwitz.

Etty Hillesum, a remarkable Jewish woman, has become an insightful, profound and inspirational voice through her diaries, which were published in the 1980s.

Determined to face the inner landscape of her own troubled mind, she also refused to escape an outer landscape dominated by Nazi oppression in occupied Holland.

The play which celebrates the anniversary of Etty’s birth in 1914, brings her diaries and experiences alive as it explores her journey and her experience of life in Westerbork detention camp from where she was later deported to meet her death in Auschwitz in 1943.

Playwright Donna Worthington’s other work has included teacher training and researching at the BBC.

There will be two performances on Tuesday, September 23 and Wednesday, September 24 at 7pm.

Tickets cost £7.50 and are available from Lancaster Visitor Information Centre, The Storey, Meeting House Lane, Lancaster LA1 1TH.
