Run for Your Wife on stage

You may have endured the recent cinema version, but now there’s the opportunity to enjoy the classic comedy Run For Your Wife . . . as it should be performed! The Charity Players have chosen the Ray Cooney farce for their latest production in support of St Catherine’s Hospice.

It will be performed at the Charter Theatre from Wednesday to Saturday.

It’s the second time the Players have performed the work, and their vast experience with this sort of comedy should ensure its success.

The story revolves around taxi driver John Smith – for most men one wife is enough but he has two, and the meter is running on how much longer he’ll get away with it.

Maybe a little non-PC by today’s standards, even so the stereotypes are treated with affection.
The Players’ cast includes a mix of their regular farceurs with one or two newcomers. The company last performed Run For Your Wife in 1997 when it proved to be one of their most popular comedies.

Bernard Cribbins took the lead role in the original 1983 West End theatre debut of the play, with - amongst others - Richard Briers and Bill Pertwee.

A canine character is set to steal the show when a nationally-renowned Shakespeare company makes its debut at The Dukes in Lancaster next week.

Black Labrador Lollio has won so many fans in his role as Crab in Two Gentleman of Verona that he even has his own dog blog. He stars alongside his owner Chris Donnelly who plays the comic role of Launce in the production from May 7-11.

It will be the first time The Dukes has welcomed the Bristol-based Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory company presenting this full cast production in The Round.

Two Gentlemen of Verona is a darkly comic early romance in which friendship and love, and loyalty and betrayal are the real players.
