The action takes place in the vicarage of the village of Merton-cum-Middlewick. Vicar’s wife Penelope has been enticed by Ida, the maid and her doltish boyfriend Willie into a flutter on the football pools – which seem to have come up trumps.

The win, however, is not a certainty. It must be checked and this is where complications set in, thanks largely to the pious Rev Toop and straight-laced spinster Miss Skillon, both dead against gambling. Throw in a clutch of clergymen and another pools coupon and you soon have a household in a high state of confusion .

Tickets £7. Concessions £5 from the Box Office at Grandad Jim’s Traditional Sweet Shop, 37 Chapel Brow, Leyland.
