And the full house signs may well be up for tomorrow’s outdoor performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic operetta, The Mikado, in the lovely setting of the Hall’s grounds.

The renowned Illyria Theatre Company are touring with Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comic opera and arrive with their cast of just seven for the third show of the Hall’s current season.

Illyria’s artistic director Oliver Gray’s production of this hugely popular work comes to Lytham Hall at the beginning of a challenging 51-date tour which has already played to capacity audiences in the historic surroundings of Chepstow Castle in South Wales and Yorkshire’s famous Harewood House.

The first two shows of the season at Lytham Hall – Pride and Prejudice, which took place in a downpour and As You Like It which was performed during a heatwave – brought in almost 900 people and organiser Julian Wilde is expecting another big crowd for tomorrow

He said: “I think everyone has gone into outdoor mode, inspired perhaps by Andy Murray and, hopefully, England’s
cricketers. The last two musicals by
Illyria at Lytham Hall have been spectacular. I feel that audiences like the change from the traditional rather formal D’Oyly Carte style of Gilbert and Sullivan. In Illyria’s version of The Mikado, the cast will each play several roles which all adds to the humour, but we can look forward to first-class singing too.

The audience in Lytham was especially responsive last July and the cast is really looking forward this return visit.”
