Children’s favourite The Gruffalo is coming to Preston Guild Hall next year.

Tall Stories Theatre Company, which holds the official licence to bring the hugely popular tales to the national stage, has announced it will be arriving at our city’s Charter Theatre from Thursday, July 24 to Saturday, July 26 next year.

The musical version of this children’s favourite has already been a big hit in the West End, where it starred local girl Josie Cerise (pictured above) as the central character of the mouse.

The enchanting tale, in which the clever mouse convinces the other, fiercer creatures in the Deep Dark Wood that the mythical Gruffalo is much bigger and more fearsome than they, was written by Julia Donaldson with illustrations by Axel Scheffler.

The mouse encounters a wheeler-dealer fox, an eccentric old owl and a maraca-shaking, party mad snake – and manages to scare these hungry creatures away with tall stories of the much more terrifying Gruffalo.

But what will happen when he has a close encounter with the fearsome creature he thought existed only in his imagination?

The Gruffalo was voted the nation’s number one bedtime story by BBC Radio 2 listeners and this show, produced with close co-operation with its creators, has now been performed to more than one million people worldwide.

Aimed at children aged three and over and their families, there are plenty of songs, laughs and a few frights along the way.

The Sunday Times called it “A fine piece of children’s theatre”.

Tickets for the Charter Theatre shows are on sale now at £11, with schools or groups at £8.50, from the box office on 0844 844 7714.
