Grand will be caught in a trap

It’s 60 years old and what a fitting place and Blackpool’s Grand Theatre is to celebrate The Mousetrap’s diamond anniversary.

The wonderful old building, with its ornate ceilings and wonderful “old fashioned” feeling was just the place to bring Agatha Christie’s famous murder-mystery to life.

Following a world premiere at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham in October 1952, the stage version of The Mousetrap moved to the West End, and took the theatrical world by storm.

The plot, typical Agatha Christie, has been keeping audiences on the edge of their seats for decades.

Though I must confess in my case that was partially because we were seated “up in the Gods” and the seats were not overly comfortable.

Nevertheless, the actors on this special anniversary tour, received the full support of the Lancashire audience.

The show has been such a hit that The Grand has been forced to put on an extra matinee during this celebratory week to meet demand.

For those who don’t know, the who-dunnit centres around a murder at a country guest house, cut off from the rest of the world by a heavy swoon drift.

The simple plot isn’t the fastest moving, but the acting was first rate and delivered inrush a way that they ( and their predecessors) have managed to keep paying audiences happy for a long time.

Judging by the response from Blackpool’s theatre goers this is one show which will keep on rolling.
