The society, which began life two years ago at Manchester Met University, now has 40 members and will showcase its unique “community” comedy at Hoghton Village Hall for the very first time.

Sam Danson, who is co-chair of the society and also from Hoghton, said: “This event is the first of its kind in Hoghton in a very long time. Our comedy nights are unique and unlike those of any other comedy group – it’s like a community and we like audiences to feel part of that community.

“We’ll have seven acts on during Saturday night from all around the county and it’s set to be a really good night.”

The society has travelled round the county, performing in major cities, including Manchester and Birmingham, and is set to visit the Edinburgh Fringe Festival next year.

Sam, who is studying contemporary theatre at the university and also writes sitcoms, said: “I was always deemed the class clown at school and really enjoyed making people laugh, so when I went to uni I decided to get involved with a comedy society.

“The people involved range from music students to philosophy students and we pretty much cover every kind of comedy you can think of. It’s great when you see new members gain the confidence to perform.”

During the live improvisation section of the show, audience members can suggest scenarios to put the acts on the spot. Sam said: “It’s my favourite, you never know how mad or crazy it will get.
