Get down with the sickness

After 10 years of performing summer productions of Shakespeare around the region, Preston-based Dean Taylor Productions this year stage a modern West End comedy.

Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell, by Keith Waterhouse, has been a starring role for Peter O’Toole, James Bolam and Tom Conti in the past – but they never had the chance to perform it in the great outdoors.

Which is where Dean and his team claim a first, with a host of outdoor locations lined up around the North West. But, don’t worry, many of them have an indoor option if the weather threatens to upstage them!

Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell is Waterhouse’s affectionate take on his friend and
drinking chum, the racing correspondent for The
Spectator, Sporting Life and other publications, who was often too inebriated to meet his deadline.

The editor would leave his column blank with the explanation ‘Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell’ at its foot.

The serial husband and bon-viveur would instead hold court in his local, The Coach and Horses, Soho.

The show visits locations ranging from Preston’s Avenham Park to Lowther Pavilion in Lytham, Wigan’s Haigh Hall, east Lancashire’s Whalley Abbey, Lydiate Abbey near Maghull and Chorley Cricket Club.
