A bold new version of Stephen Sondheim’s musical thriller Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street has been radically reworked for Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre.

The show, which is currently playing at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds to critical acclaim and packed houses, is being completely re-rehearsed and re-staged for the Exchange’s unique in-the-round space.

The result of the first collaboration of its kind between the two venues will run at the Royal Exchange from next Friday to November 30.

It will be re-created again on a larger scale in 2015 in an ambitious co-production with Welsh National Opera and Wales Millennium Centre.

This spine-chilling contemporary take on Sondheim’s classic explores obsession and revenge set against the backdrop of a world where the poor and powerless are increasingly disenfranchised by the power-wielding rich.

It is an entertaining musical thriller about a man driven mad by injustice and is widely acknowledged as Sondheim’s musical masterpiece.
