The band – ex-The Verve guitar hero Nick McCabe, The Verve bassist Simon Jones, former Portishead drummer Michele ‘Mig’ Schillace and Davide Rossi (multi-instrumentalist and arranger for Goldfrapp and Coldplay) behind singer Amelia Tucker – will play 53 Degrees on October 7 this year.

The project began in 2008, after Nick and Simon had asked Davide to provide string parts for The Verve’s ‘Forth’ album.

Identifying a common sensibility of pop and grandeur, the three continuedworking together as Rossi joined the legendary Wigan band on the road. The trio enlisted Mig, a long-time mutual friend, and flew to Denmark to record in 2009. The percussionist had at that time been managing singer Amelia Tucker, who blew Nick, Simon and Davide with her voice, and she joined as a full time member.

Releasing the well recieved ‘Kurofune EP’ as Black Ships in 2011, the five later convened in McCabe’s South London studio last year to record new material.

The resulting album New Shores, mixed by Jim Spencer (Robert Wyatt, Echo & The Bunnymen, Oasis), is a 10-track epic.

Dark yet upbeat, all spaced-out vocals, deep beats, rolling bass, meditative chord sequences and explosive strings, critical acclaim has been near universal.

A band spokesman said: “These songs are a transformation of the music that surrounded each member in their early careers.”
