And when a Preston salon flew in maestro Mario Mayer for a training day he really turned on the style.

The award-winning hairdresser ran a day-long tutorial for barbers from across the county who wanted to to brush up on their scissor skills. And later Slawek Ziaja, boss at the Beauty Zone in Church Street, said: “It was a fantastic day. Mario was a real inspiration.”

Slawek explained: “In the first session he assessed them all to find out what they could do, then he did a barbering demonstration and then in the final session he watched them work on models to see how much they had learned.

“He said he was very happy with the big improvement they had made. They learned more in one day with Mario than they could have done anywhere else. Barbering is his passion, he travels the world giving demonstrations. We got him here because he is a friend of a friend. And we’re hoping he will pay us another visit, maybe in a few months.

“Obviously he is going to be busy in the coming weeks preparing for the World Championships. He is in big demand. He’s very well-known in the barbering world and we were very lucky to be able to get him here.”

Last year Mario - full name Mariusz Majchrzak - came runner-up in the World Championships.

In September he will be in Paris trying to go one better in the 2018 event.

When he hasn’t been travelling the world for competitions and demonstrations, he has been cutting hair in St Andrews, Scotland for the past two years.

Now he has returned home to Poland to found a barbering academy where he will train students how to be the best in the business.

After 21 years as a barber, Mario is at the top of his profession and hotly tipped to claim the World crown.
