Permission to sing, Street

Northern Soul icon Judy Street has finally overcome the tone deaf powers-that-be, secured a work permit and WILL headline Preston’s Got Soul at 53 Degrees early next month.

Street originally planned to appear at the regular Northern Soul event back in May, but a mix-up at Manchester Airport left her unable to perform and scuppered a five-date tour of the UK.

Aged just 19, Judy sealed her name forever in the hearts of Northern Soul fans with ‘What’, a B-side recorded in 1968 which, five years later, became a routine floor-filler at the famous Wigan Casino. The song has never stopped spinning since and, despite the fact only 1,000 copies were initially pressed, it is today rated among THE best Northern Soul tracks ever.
