Nicholas leads Chamber in Great Hall concert

The world-renowned Northern Chamber Orchestra plays in Lancaster University’s Great Hall tonight.

Part of the Lancaster International Concert series, the orchestra will be joined by the interrnationally acclaimed oboist Nicholas Daniel.

At the age of 18 Nicholas won the BBC’s prestigious Young Musician of the Year Competition, a win he believes inspired a generations of musicians to take up his formerly “obscure” instrument.

Nicholas said: “There are people now in the profession today who started playing the oboe because they saw me on TV; Boosey & Hawkes told me that sales of the oboe doubled overnight after I won!

“I’m grateful a comparatively obscure instrument became better known.”

Nicholas will perform Vaughan Williams’ virtuosic Oboe Concerto and Bach’s Concerto for Oboe and Violin.

Other works in the programme include the famous Pachelbel’s Canon.

The group performs without a conductor – a challenge only the finest professional musicians are able to rise to.

The orchestra, formed in the 1960s, is compromised of distinguished chamber musicians who play as principals with other orchestras all over the UK and abroad and regularly appear with the NCO as soloists.

The full Programme is: Purcell Abdelazar Suite, Walton (two pieces from Henry V, Vaughan Williams (concert for Oboe), Pachelbel Cannon and Gigue, Arthur Butterworth Elegy,J.S Bach (concert for violin and Oboe and Mendelessohn String Symphony.
