Hold on, there’s a Moses talk

The subject of the talk will be Moses Holden (1777-1864), who was a Preston resident for 82 years. The lectures he gave in Preston and other Lancashire towns and cities 190 years ago are seen as comparable to this weekend’s event

A further connection is to be found in Moses Holden’s endeavours in founding and promoting the Institute for the Diffusion of Knowledge in the town, the institution from which UCLan evolved.

The Sun at Night on Preston’s Victorian covered market, will showcase a year in the life of our star as you have never seen or heard it before.

Over the course of two nights, Saturday and Sunday, the market will be transformed into the centre of our solar system with a large-scale free public art installation by David Henckel and Dan Wilkinson.

One year’s worth of footage of The Sun has been condensed into a 30-minute film, which includes the Transit of Venus which took place in 2012, that will slowly rotate around a large cylindrical projection screen accompanied by an appropriately deep and sinister soundtrack.

David said: “We’ve chosen an open space in the centre of town to attract people passing by who may never normally engage with art and take them by surprise.

“They will essentially stumble across a blazing sun in the middle of the night.”
