Twelve venues are taking part in the national Heritage Open Days celebration.

The event celebrates England’s architecture and culture by offering free access to places that normally charge or are usually closed.

At 2pm on both days a walking tour takes place from Avenham Park, also taking in Miller Park next door.

On Saturday, the Harris Museum offers tours at 11am and 3pm, family Egyptian balcony tours at noon and 2pm and a ‘virtual’ Egyptian balcony tour at 1pm. Booking is advised on 01772 905414.

Tours of County Hall take place from Pitt Street every half an hour from 10am-12.30pm on Saturday, while the Lancashire Archives on Bow Lane open from 10am-4pm with tours at 11am, noon, 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

Tours of Preston Town Hall take place on the hour from 10am to 2pm on Saturday – booking advised.

Tours of Fulwood Barracks are on offer at the Lancashire Infantry Museum on Watling Street Road from 10am-4pm on Saturday.

The Minster Church of St John on Church Street, opens from 10am-2pm on Saturday, while the Grade 1 listed St Walburge’s Church on Pedder Street, opens from 10.30am-2.30pm.

St Peter’s Church Arts Centre has tours at noon and 2pm, while The Museum of Lancashire on Stanley Street opens for tours from 10.30am-5pm on Saturday and from noon on Sunday.

PC Carpets and Beds shows off its Grade 2 listed Baroque style interiors from 10am-5pm on Saturday.

And Preston Playhouse on Market Street West offers tours from 10am-4pm on Sunday.
