Gemma Is A Real Ray of Light
MOJO Album of the week and BBC 6 Music Album of the Day recipient Gemma Ray will visit Preston’s music venue The Ferret next week, performing and promoting her new album, Milk For Your Motors.
The Essex-born artist, currently Berlin based, will be stopping off as part of a brief UK tour that also sees her recording a live session for the BBC’s Mark Radcliffe, before jetting off to a number of US and European dates.
Her unique musical approach fuses genres and has earned her such diverse tags as “pop-noir,” “sideways blues,” and “gothic folk,” while her first album, Lights Out Zoltar! (released 2009,) earned her an Independent Music Award, and she even counts the likes of Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page amongst her fans.
In her short career she has already shared stages with Marianne Faithfull, Kris Kristofferson, Seasick Steve, Amy Winehouse, Lambchop, Mott the Hoople, and Nick Cave side-project Grinderman, has collaborated with Sparks and members of The Bad Seeds, and even appeared on a revamped version of Top of the Pops in 2012 with her single Rescue Me. The new album, her sixth in as many years, was described in MOJO as “unpredictable and inspired” in their glowing four-star review.
In support will be Manchester singer-songwriter Elle Mary, with her band The Bad Men, and Hebden Bridge based Lucy & The Caterpillar – both original and unmissable female vocalists.
Tickets to the performance, on Tuesday 30th September from 8pm, are £5 and available online from www.seetickets.com (event 813140,) also at the venue and from Action Records.
