According to presenter Jane Moore, doctors had "brought him out of the coma", but said "he's not regained consciousness yet".

The panel on the lunch time talk show had been discussing Kate's emotional interview on Good Morning Britain last Friday (June 5), where she tearfully updated viewers on her husband's battle with COVID-19.

Jane told Loose Women: "We've always known that Kate is strong and an amazing woman, but I honestly don't know how she's still standing.

"Derek contracted coronavirus, he went to hospital, it looked initially like he might have a Boris Johnson experience, and come out largely unscathed, but it's attacked all his vital organs.

"He's now Covid free, they've brought him out of the coma, they put him into an induced coma and brought him out of the coma, and he's not regained consciousness yet.

"So every day she is living with this awful uncertainty, that they are never going to know if he will recover."

But Kate said that doctors had warned her that Derek may never fully recover from his 10-week battle with coronavirus.

After being told the news, Kate said: "I threw up, there and then. People had said to me before that they thought he was going to die, but not that he might stay in this state.

"It’s like a second level of loss. We may lose him even if we don’t lose him. If he doesn’t wake up, then he’s sort of lost anyway… not that I’d love him any less or ever give up."

The TV presenter said her husband is now testing negative for Covid-19, but the illness has “wreaked extraordinary damage”.

The 52-year-old, from Chorley, has been in hospital since late March when he was admitted with a severe case of coronavirus.

In late April, she revealed that Derek had been put into an induced coma after his condition deteriorated.

But according to the Loose Women panel this week, he appears to have been taken out of the medically induced state as he continues to fight his way back to consciousness.

Former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown have sent recorded messages of support to Derek, a former Labour Party adviser.

Derek, 52, attended Southlands High School in Chorley, where he graduated in 1984, before studying at Runshaw College in Leyland.

The couple have two children, Darcey, 14, and 10-year-old Billy, who have been unable to visit him due to the infection risk.
