Face to face with conflict

The I Remember exhibition at The Dukes gallery is the latest show by former Lancashire Newspapers photographer Darren Andrews.

The exhibition was inspired by Darren’s meeting Russell Dunkeld, right, a D-Day veteran who was only 18 when he landed in Normandy in 1944 as a Royal Navy medic.

Russell put Darren in touch with another veteran of the Normandy Landings, Lance Rooke, known as Paddy, whose portrait is also featured in the exhibition.

Lance lied about his age to sign up in 1942, aged 16, and landed a glider on the Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944.

He went on to fight at the Battle of the Bulge and was mentioned in dispatches.

Among other servicemen and women captured by Darren are those who have served in Northern Ireland, Korea, Suez, Cyprus, the Falklands and Iraq.

They include Elley Sowerby, the first military female attached to the Royal Regiment of Wales, Ted Tandy, a specialist swimmer and canoeist who served in the Special Boat Service, Bill Hyde, who was in the submarine service and Peter Jackson, who became the Chief Lighthouse Engineer in the Arabian Gulf.

Darren is a photographer and filmmaker with more than 25 years’ experience.

He has worked for national and local newspapers, exhibited at galleries throughout the UK and has work in the Royal Photographic Society Archive.
